Berkeley as an Urban Garden
As someone raised in arid Southern California, the East Bay is a treasure trove of lush surroundings. Everywhere you look, there are forests, small and large, from delicate nasturtiums to towering redwoods. Neighborhoods in Berkeley are a time capsule. A short walk is a tour through generations of effort to cultivate a green community, with overgrown yards often untouched by the urban tech sprawl of the Bay. There are massive avocado trees. Overwhelming amounts of blackberry bushes. Apple trees and nasturtium galore.
During my final year at Berkeley, I wrote down locations of many of these edible plants from my walks around town. While I don't recommend you eat other people's plants without permission, many of these are out in the open - I hope you enjoy.
